If you’re a regular reader of this newsletter, you know we love tools that help our customers run their businesses smoothly and securely. We’re big fans of CRMs and easy-to-use apps, but over the years we’ve also discovered great non-real estate tools that make it much easier to stick to our 2020 resolutions and stay productive. Here are five of our favorites.

Freedom

What it is:
Freedom blocks distracting websites and apps so you can concentrate on your work or your family.

Why we love it:
Americans spend nearly half the day  interacting on their phones. In a business like ours, which is so reliant on constant interaction, that number is probably even higher. The problem is these non-stop distractions take us out of what experts call a “flow state,” or the effortless feeling you have when you’re giving a task your full attention. You know how it goes: One text message ping leads to an email check leads to a Facebook check leads to a news site check … and that’s where Freedom comes in. Choose the sites that are your major offenders and block them for a set period of time. Freedom is available both for desktops and smartphones, so you can focus on the sites that will help you build your business.

Cost:
Free trial, with plans ranging from $2.42 per month to $129 for unlimited access forever.

HabitBull

What it is:
This simple app helps you stay on top of your resolutions. Just pick a goal, set a reminder to check in, and track your habits. The app is based on the theories behind the bestselling book “The Power of Habit.”

Why we love it:
It’s great for data geeks. Each habit you set has its own calendar, and you can set your own timelines for each one. If you like seeing your progress over time in the form of charts and graphs, HabitBull has you covered. Plus, you can share your growth in the HabitBull community.

Cost:
Free for the basic app, and up to $14.99 per year for enhanced functionality.

Evernote

What it is:
A single place for your notes, ideas, reminders, as well as articles you’d like to read later, photos, screen shots … you name it.

Why we love it:
Evernote has been around since 2004 — eons in tech years — and it has stood the test of time because it is truly useful. With the basic plan, you can organize your meeting notes and to-do lists by clients. With the enhanced plan, Evernote morphs into a full project management tool. You can share your notes and task lists, create deadlines, and more (and Evernote handily syncs across devices, so the note you write on your phone will also appear on your desktop app). Install the Evernote web clipper to save an article or site you want to read later.

IMPORTANT NOTE: As with all productivity tools, do not share customer information or wire transfer details. Use a safe portal instead.

Cost:
Free for the basic plan and up to about $30 per month for the business plan, which includes access for multiple users.

LastPass

What it is:
A website password vault and password generator.

Why we love it:
Online security is one of the biggest issues facing our industry. LastPass will not only store your passwords for you (no more digging through sticky notes or using “password” as your password), but it can also auto-generate secure passwords and change them periodically for you. Once you install LastPass on your desktop or your app, LastPass will auto-populate the username and password sections of your websites.

Cost:
Free for individual users. LastPass also has business solutions that cost up to $8 per user per month.
